VI COMMANDO

L/Sgt. William Lister, formerly of the Border Regiment, served with No.5 Troop of No.6 Commando as a Troop Sergeant from, at least, October 1942 until, at least, 10^th March 1943.

He was awarded the Military Medal on 26^th September 1943 for his actions during the withdrawal of the Commando from Djebel el Azag on 6^th January 1943. The citation reads:

‘During the withdrawal from Djebel el Azag, 6^th January 1943, Sgt. Lister covered the withdrawal of his own troops by advancing and taking on the enemy with a Colt automatic and one grenade.  This he did under machine-gun fire, thereby enabling his section to withdraw in safety.  Apart from this, he showed great coolness throughout the action.’

William Lister was in No.5 Troop of No.6 Commando on D-Day.
