VI COMMANDO

L/Sgt. William Lister MM

L/Sgt. William Lister, formerly of the Border Regiment, served with No.5 Troop of No.6 Commando as a Troop Sergeant from, at least, October 1942 until, at least, 10th March 1943.

He was awarded the Military Medal on 26th September 1943 for his actions during the withdrawal of the Commando from Djebel el Azag on 6th January 1943. The citation reads:

‘During the withdrawal from Djebel el Azag, 6th January 1943, Sgt. Lister covered the withdrawal of his own troops by advancing and taking on the enemy with a Colt automatic and one grenade.  This he did under machine-gun fire, thereby enabling his section to withdraw in safety.  Apart from this, he showed great coolness throughout the action.’

William Lister was in No.5 Troop of No.6 Commando on D-Day.
