Spr. John William "Big Bill" Scott, formerly of thre Royal Engineers, trained in Achnacarry in January 1944, aged 22 years, served with No.3 Troop of No.6 Commando following D-Day and is also noted as serving in No.5 Troop. Spr. John William "Big Bill" Scott was originally from Pelton Fell, but later moved to Fishburn (County Durham).
After the war he stayed on as a regular in the Royal Engineers but eventually transferred to the Military Police and became a Warrant Officer in the Special Investigation Branch (SIB) serving in Gibraltar, Germany and Kenya (during the Mau Mau uprising).
